La sfârşitul săptămânii trecute, un bun prieten mi-a trimis un link:

o melodie care o să-ţi facă şi mai dor de casă şi de munte şi de prietenă

...asta se întâmpla sâmbătă, cu câteva clipe înainte să plecăm - eu şi colegul meu de echipă şi de apartament - din hotel spre apartamentul ce-l voi numi casă pentru un an de acum înainte. De atunci, 4 zile pline de mutat, de făcut cumpărături de „casă nouă”, de un nou început. Apoi, aseară îl aud spunând că - deşi vorbeşte în fiecare zi cu familia şi cu prietena lui - că îi este dor... Primul gând ce mi-a trecut prin minte, a fost că mie îmi va lua tare mult până să spun aşa ceva... Şi totuşi nu a trecut nici măcar o zi întreagă şi...

Cu menţiunea că pozele sunt scoase direct de pe cameră (fără editări ulterioare) ofer ochi şi urechi deschise criticii şi aprecierilor constructive.

Lanterna Magică: Foto-sinteză

În această seară de sâmbătă, 3 iulie 2010, începând cu ora 21, la Casa de Cultură "Mihai Ursachi", Clubul Fotografilor organizează proiecţia de fotografii Lanterna Magică: "Foto-sinteză".

Cu prilejul împlinirii a doi ani de foto-existenţă, Clubul Fotografilor deschide o nouă sesiune de foto-sinteză în Parcul Copou, de largă respiraţie, pentru minte, inimă şi dantură.
Între cerul înstelat deasupra noastră şi legea morală din noi, vor fi proiectate 190 de fotografii realizate de 38 dintre membrii Clubului Fotografilor.

Concertul începe de la ora 19, iar intrarea în sala TVR Iaşi este gratuită; însă trebuie ajuns până la 18:50, deoarece evenimentul va fi filmat.

Miercuri, 19 mai, începând cu ora 19, sub copacul răcoros din Mojo, ne întălnim cu Ion Mitican: ne întindem la poveşti şi vedem poze din Iaşul Vechi.

Am îndrăgit istoria în general şi mai ales pe cea a Iaşiului. Mi-am dezvoltat gustul pentru scris graţie profesorului de istorie din liceu. Se bătea prea multă monedă pe savanţi şi realizările lor, iar el, ca să evite asemenea lucru, ne ţinea extraordinare lecţii despre Iaşi.

Text location bar for Nautilus 2.30+ [Ubuntu 10.04+]

After installing the Lynx, there was only the button version of Nautilus' location bar and an apparent impossibility of typing in a given path directly:

Looking for a solution, I found out about the Ctrl+L shortcut that temporarily enables the text edit version of the location bar:

Taming the Lynx

After a long back-up, I exchanged my pet Jackalope for a pet Lynx. Several reasons made me wait so impatiently to catch this new Lynx, most of them were nurtured by the all the details I started missing right after deciding to give back my pet Koala for the older Jackalope. So, my mind was set... and yes, I am talking about Ubuntu here.
I first raised my eyebrow when I saw that even if the 29th of August was long gone, the Update Manager in my Jackalope was only allowing me to update back to the Koala. Then the broadband was put to good use in order to get the ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso.torrent. Booting up from the burned image, all I got was a not so attractive error in return:

so I went for the ubuntu-10.04-dvd-i386.iso.torrent. This time the install succeeded, yet left behind a bitter-sweet taste:

• bitter: I don't remember if it ever took so long to install Ubuntu! Maybe because right after 46% I read that the install process will soon finish... Maybe because I was able to see the 95% status for a whole 10 min. period... This made me quit the install, only to restart from scratch an time the entire process: 34 minutes from boot till seeing the desktop!
• sweet: from an aesthetics pov, it looks a lot better!
  
  1. placing the close, minimize and maximize/restore buttons on the left hand side might take a bit to get used to, but it's a good "steal" in the interface improvement.
  2. both of the new themes - Ambiance and Radiance - have an improved look and feel. I prefer Radiance, and it might just replace New Wave for me.

That was the very first contact, but wait till you dig deeper! Do you want to install the proprietary Nvidia or ATI video drivers? Then get ready to say Bbye to the beautiful boot logo or to fix it!
I don't really care about the addition of PiTiVi video editor, I embrace the new versions of Nautilus, gEdit and maybe even OpenOffice, but I am going to add what fits my Ubuntu needs; right now!

Introduction to Apache CouchDB [Webcast@O'Reilly]

I first found out about Apache CouchDB while researching about NoSQL for an academic assignment. Then, discovered more while attending FOSDEM 2010.

Here's a brief description:

CouchDB is a distributed document database accessed via HTTP and JSON and queried using JavaScript Map Reduce. CouchDB focusses on simplicity and reliability, with a data replication model that makes it well suited for mobile and offline applications.

Zile Verzi

Pe când făceam parte din AIESEC Iaşi, am fost bucuros să iau parte la IaŞi Reciclează, organizat pe atunci împreună cu TERIS şi Bethany.

Am fost plăcut surprins să observ că acea atitudine nu a rămas uitată, ci generaţiile ulterioare au îmbogăţit-o de la an la an. Astfel, anul acesta am aflat de continuarea iniţiativei sub titlul Zile Verzi, care vine în întâmpinarea aceloraşi probleme cu proiecţii de filme documentare referitoare la mediu şi cu diverse alte activităţi ce se vor desfăşura după următorul program.

La această ediţie sunt mai degrabă atras de proiecţiile de filme ce se vor derula la sediul Centrului Cultural Francez din Iaşi:

When I first saw the 2010 TED talk where Blaise Agüera y Arcas demos augmented-reality maps, I was quite amazed to see the level of detail of the (visual) information that became so easily within reach. But a question that popped into my head back than, just came back to my mind when I used today Google's similar feature:

In these differentiate-or-die times, when so many people try to surface their uniqueness, is our face still the attribute closest to a unique identifier?

One (more) reason why I like France: Spotify

Unfortunately, Spotify is not (yet) available in Romania, but since I heard good things about it before, I gave it a shot.

The first good impression was from an future-user experience point of view: even if they currently only support Windows and Mac, they are aware that the world is a bigger:

So, after having problems running it under wine 1.0.1, I switched to the beta version - currently 1.1.31 - as easy as writing
sudo apt-get install wine1.2
and everything went smoothly.

Right now, I'm waiting for the world to change, till Spotify will be available in Romania too!

Going to FOSDEM 2010

FOSDEM is probably the most developer-oriented European Free and Open Source conference. It is taking place in Brussels, Belgium on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 February 2010. Apart from having many invited speakers, the conference offers developer rooms, stands and lightning talks to projects from the Free and Open Source community.

FOSDEM, here I come!
